In a first for the company, Giant/Martin’s celebrated the grand openings of six stores in four states on April 5.

Five of the stores, which are former Shop ‘n Save locations the Carlisle, PA based division of Ahold Delhaize USA acquired earlier this year, are branded Martin’s Food Markets and are located in Smithsburg, MD; Greencastle, PA; Berryville, VA; Hedgesville, WV; and Martinsburg, WV. In addition, Giant/Martin’s refurbished and upgraded a former Redner’s store in Warrington, PA that closed in March 2018. The 56,000 square foot store, which operate under the Giant banner, serves as a replacement for a smaller store previously located in nearby Jamison, PA.

“These multiple store openings align with our aggressive long-term growth strategy – entering new markets where it makes sense and expanding our offerings for our current customers,” said Nick Bertram, president of Giant/Martin’s. Along with the recent introduction of our Giant Heirloom Market in Philadelphia and our Giant Direct e-commerce hub in Lancaster, our team has demonstrated a relentless focus on innovation that allows customers to connect with our brand whenever and however they want.”

The deal for Giant/Martin’s to acquire the former Shop ‘n Save locations was first announced in November 2018 and was part of Supervalu/UNFI’s plan to shed all of its corporately-owned supermarkets nationally. The deal was approved by the FTC in early 2019 and the five stores closed temporarily March 27 to begin extensive remodels before opening on April 5.

The retailer has recently made a series of strategic investments to its store fleet Pennsylvania, including the first Giant Heirloom Markets in Philadelphia, where three additional locations are planned to open this year, as well as new stores opening this year in East Stroudsburg and Walnutport communities.
