In a bid to drive more business, Dollar Tree has announced plans to start selling alcohol in approximately 1,000 Family Dollar units. It will also expand freezers and coolers at around 400 locations. The Chesapeake, VA-based discount retailer, which completed its purchase of the Mathews, NC-based Family Dollar banner in 2015 for nearly $9 billion, has already added alcohol to roughly 45 stores and expanded freezers and coolers in approximately 55 stores in the first quarter of its fiscal year 2019.

The discount chain had previously announced in March that it would be shuttering 390 underperforming Family Dollar stores this year and rebranding 200 others to its core Dollar Tree brand.
