March 24, 2020

Effective Friday, March 27, most Giant Food stores will adjust hours of operations to be open from 6:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m. All Giant Food 24-hour locations will remain open 24 hours. The decreased hours at most locations will give Giant Food store teams additional time to replenish and thoroughly clean the store, as they balance the demands of a significant increase in consumer needs. The first hour of operations, 6:00-7:00 a.m. is reserved for senior citizens and immunocompromised individuals, including pregnant women and caregivers shopping for the immunocompromised, so that they may shop and practice safe social distancing.

In addition, beginning Monday, March 30, Giant Food pharmacies will open early each Monday and Thursday at 6:00 a.m. and stay open until their regular closing time. Giant Food pharmacies will maintain their regular operational hours all other days.

Message from the interim president of Giant Food, Ira Kress:

Dear Giant Food Customers,

As a local supermarket that has served the Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia and Delaware area for 84 years, Giant Food understands the vital role that we play in providing for our communities, particularly when they are faced with difficult circumstances or hardships. We want to assure you that we are continuing to work hard to provide for your needs, but it has not been without challenges. Our stores, distribution centers, national supply chains and vendor partners are being pushed to their limits, but we are all working together, across the industry, to make sure that our communities have the products and services they need for their families and themselves during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our customers have been incredibly understanding despite encountering a shopping experience that is not expected or ideal, and our amazing associates have been working tirelessly to help keep our stores and distribution centers running. We know communities come together in difficult times, and we are inspired by the ways our customers, vendor partners, and associates have worked together to manage through these unprecedented times. Here are some of our thoughts on how we can continue to help one another as we manage through current challenges:

Continue to show care and concern for your neighbors.

Again, we are extremely grateful for how unbelievably supportive our customers have been when dealing with our associates and each other. Even with the increased demand for items on the shelves, customers have shown a positive attitude realizing the tireless efforts our associates are making to meet the needs of our customers.

Please try to bring your reusable bags to shop.

The increased shopping has put a strain on shopping bag supplies. Though we continue to have bags available and will continue to replenish our bag supply, it would be helpful for us, and our environment, to bring reusable bags when shopping.

Please try to purchase only what you need right now.

We are working tirelessly to restock our shelves. You can rest assured that if an item is out of stock, we are in contact with our suppliers and partners to replenish it as quickly as possible. We kindly ask that you limit your purchase to what you need right now in order to provide products to as many people as possible.

We understand that there is still some uncertainty as to how our community will navigate the next several weeks. We want to assure you of three things:

We will do everything in our power to maintain regular hours of operations for our stores and pharmacies.

At this moment, we have no plans to close stores or adjust hours. We understand that many of our customers’ schedules may currently be impacted by various school, daycare and business closures, and we want to be able to meet your needs. We are continuing to monitor our ability to service our stores and will only adjust if absolutely necessary. We have made the decision to pause ordering capabilities on Giant Pickup, due to inconsistent levels of supply by store, by day. As soon as we are confident that we can again provide an exceptional Pickup service, we will restart the program. Giant Delivers, which is fulfilled at our local distribution center, is still available, although delivery availability will fluctuate due to the high demand.

We will continue to provide the same low prices and promotions.

Giant Food continues to offer the same low prices and bonus buy discounts that are available each day to our shoppers. Additionally, we continue to work with our vendor partners to ensure that we can offer promotional savings in our ads and digital coupons. It is extremely important for us to continue to be a retailer that our customers can trust, and that means continuing to offer fair, competitive pricing that they can afford.

We will continue to support our community partners.

The stress and strain of the COVID-19 pandemic extends to our Feeding America food bank partners and all our charitable partners. We have been in close communication with each of our nonprofit partners and have tried to assist them as best we can. As we navigate the next several weeks, we are committed to continuing that dialogue to understand their needs and to be of service.

We want to thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to bring our stores back to our normal operational standards. Together, as a community, we will get through this and be stronger for it.

Best regards,

Ira Kress,

Interim President Giant Food
