Albertsons Companies has named Emily Turner senior vice president and chief marketing officer, bringing in a marketing executive with experience at The Fresh Market, Dollar Tree and Family Dollar as the supermarket company works to strengthen customer engagement and its overall value proposition.
Turner joined Albertsons onAug. 17 and will lead the company’s enterprise marketing strategy across the functions that shape how it connects with customers, according to the company. She reports to Michelle Larson, executive vice president and chief merchandising officer.
Turner joins Albertsons from The Fresh Market, where she served as chief marketing officer and built the specialty grocer’s enterprise marketing function. During her tenure, she led marketing and digital transformation initiatives, expanded the retailer’s digital customer experience and helped increase retail media revenue, according to Albertsons.
Before joining The Fresh Market, Turner held marketing leadership roles at Dollar Tree and Family Dollar. She also previously held senior customer engagement and retail media positions with dunnhumby, giving her experience across loyalty, customer data, shopper marketing and retail media.
Her appointment comes as Albertsons undertakes changes to its operating model and looks to improve its competitive position amid pressure on sales and customer traffic. The company announced a simplified operating structure in July and said it would use targeted price investments to improve its value proposition and retain shoppers.
Turner’s experience at The Fresh Market also included a focus on loyalty and personalized customer engagement. Earlier this year, she discussed the specialty grocer’s revamped rewards program and its first native mobile app, saying the company used customer data and shopper feedback to refine the program and provide more personalized offers and experiences.
At The Fresh Market, Turner emphasized a marketing approach built around product discovery, quality and freshness rather than promotions alone. She said the retailer sought to use its loyalty program and digital capabilities to give shoppers both value and opportunities to discover new products and recipes.
Albertsons said Turner brings a “customer-first, data-driven” approach intended to enhance customer experiences and support growth. Her responsibilities will include the company’s broader marketing agenda as Albertsons continues to invest in customer engagement, digital capabilities and retail media.
The appointment adds another senior executive to Albertsons’ leadership team during a period of broader organizational change. The company is also preparing for the retirement of President and CFO Sharon McCollam later this year and has been making changes intended to improve efficiency and performance.
