Food Trade Roundup for September 19, 2026

What belongs in the cart, what it costs and whether shoppers even need to enter a store to buy it are all being reconsidered.

Alexander Wissel sits down with Giant Food dietitian Mandy Katz to cut through the absolutes surrounding the “healthiest” possible diet. Duke Winston reports on the lawmakers and retail-theft specialists honored by the Maryland Retailers Alliance, while Jessica Smith examines Costco’s dramatic expansion of Uber Eats delivery.

This week, I took a closer look at Price Chopper and Market 32’s refreshingly simple promise to cut prices on 1,000 items — and why choosing the right 1,000 will determine whether the strategy truly resonates with shoppers.

And Maria Maggio takes us inside The Giant Company’s annual sales summit in Carlisle, Pa., with a new gallery featuring the retailer’s leadership team and a whole lot more.

It’s all below…

Interview: What Is the Healthiest Possible Diet?

For all the certainty surrounding healthy eating, there is no single diet that works for everyone. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes and nuts are a pretty good place to start, but what “healthy” looks like in practice depends on the person filling the cart.

Mandy Katz, Director of Healthy Living at Giant Food and a Registered Dietitian, says factors including lifestyle, activity level, health conditions, culture, food preferences and personal goals all belong in the conversation.

Here’s what she told Alexander Wissel in the first installment of our interview series…

Maryland Retailers Alliance Honors State Lawmakers, Retail Theft Prevention Leaders

Maryland retailers need allies in Annapolis – and increasingly, they need sharp partners in the fight against organized retail crime. The Maryland Retailers Alliance recognized both at its 2026 annual awards ceremony, honoring two state lawmakers and three retail theft prevention leaders for their work on behalf of the state’s retail community.

Duke Winston has details on the five honorees…

Costco Expands Uber Eats Delivery; 47 States Now Covered

Costco’s famous warehouse treasure hunt is becoming less dependent on actually visiting a warehouse. The retailer has expanded its Uber Eats partnership from 17 states to 47, putting nearly 600 U.S. clubs within reach of on-demand and scheduled delivery customers.

The arrangement covers everything from fresh produce and bulk groceries to household essentials. Costco members can link their accounts at checkout to receive applicable member pricing to leverage the killer economics of warehouse-club pricing.

ICYMI: Price Chopper Needs to Chop Prices Smartly

Like a lot of things in 2026, “value” looks pretty complicated sometimes: digital coupons to virtually clip, various loyalty currencies to accumulate, personalized offers to activate, weekly promotions to track — and, of course, apps that promise to find a custom-tailored deal, just for you.

Now Price Chopper and Market 32, with around 130 locations in six Northeastern states, are making a decidedly (some might say blessedly) less sophisticated pitch.

Here’s what I found…
