Bergman Retires As President Of Shoppers

Shoppers Food & Pharmacy announced September 27 that its president, Dick Bergman, has informed the company of his retirement , which was effective October 1.

“I am very proud of the work we accomplished at Shoppers during my tenure as president, but am looking forward to retiring and spending more time with my family,” said Bergman. “I will miss working with the many wonderful associates at Shoppers and wish the team the very best as they continue to grow the business.”

“I appreciate the years of service Dick has provided Shoppers and wish him the best as he begins this new chapter in his life,” said Brian Huff, senior vice president of specialty retail for Shoppers’ parent company, Supervalu. “Dick has achieved many key successes during his tenure. By building on these accomplishments, we look forward to the continued success of Shoppers.”

Bergman’s successor as president of Shoppers has not yet been announced. In the interim, Huff will assume his responsibilities. Supervalu said that all Shoppers operations and business strategies will continue as normal.

Bergman’s career in the grocery industry began in 1963 with Kroger, where he spent nearly 30  years. During his time with Kroger, Bergman worked in nearly every aspect of grocery retail, from carryout and meat clerk to management and director positions in advertising, operations and corporate functions.

Bergman also served as vice president of operations and merchandising for Rice Epicurean Markets in Houston. He spent five years in that post. Bergman joined the Farm Fresh organization in 1998, where he was senior vice president of merchandising and operations. He was then promoted to president of Scott’s Food and Pharmacy, the then-Supervalu owned retail operation based in Fort Wayne, IN. Scott’s was later acquired by Kroger.

Bergman has served as president of Shoppers since 2006, when he succeeded the retiring Bill White.
