COO Kurt Schertle Exits Weis Markets

Kurt Schertle, who has served as chief operations officer at Weis Markets since 2014, has left the 196-store regional supermarket chain to pursue other opportunities.

At presstime, no permanent replacement had been named to fill Schertle’s role in the company although current chairman, president and CEO Jonathan Weis will fill the COO role on an interim basis.

Moreover, according to an internal announcement sent on October 16 by Jonathan Weis, chairman, president and CEO of the Sunbury, PA-based merchant, several current executives will have new direct reports. Now reporting to Weis are: Bob Gleeson, senior VP-merchandising and marketing; David Gose, senior VP-store operations; Greg Zeh, senior VP-chief information officer; and John Driscoll, VP-construction and store development. They previously reported to Schertle.

Additionally, Nick Cicco, VP-pharmacy, will now report to Gose and Terry Wallace, VP-supply chain and logistics, will now report to Gleeson.

Schertle first joined Weis as VP-sales and merchandising in 2009, was promoted to senior VP-sales and merchandising  and then to executive VP-sales and merchandising in 2012, In 2014, he was named COO.

He began his career with Basics Food Stores, working at store level before being promoted to store manager. Schertle moved up through the company, which eventually became Metro Food Markets, holding positions such as pricing director, director of GM/HBC, grocery director and VP-grocery. When Metro was consolidated into the Shoppers organization, he served as grocery director of the combined organization before being promoted to VP-grocery. At Shoppers, he rose through the ranks to become senior VP-marketing and merchandising.
