ALDI announced it will eliminate an additional 44 ingredients from its private label food, vitamin and supplement products by the end of 2027, expanding a long-running effort to simplify ingredient lists across its assortment.

The move will increase the retailer’s total list of restricted ingredients from 13 to 57 and applies to products that make up roughly 90% of items sold in its stores, reflecting the chain’s heavy reliance on private label.

Company officials said the decision was driven in part by customer feedback and is intended to make it easier for shoppers to understand what is in the products they purchase. Reformulated products will be introduced in phases through 2027, with updated ingredient information reflected on packaging.

The additional ingredients slated for removal include certain preservatives, artificial colors, sweeteners and additives such as bromated flour, titanium dioxide and the sweetener neotame, among others.

The announcement builds on earlier steps by Aldi to restrict ingredients in its store brands, including the removal of certified synthetic colors from all exclusive products more than a decade ago.

Scott Patton, Chief Commercial Officer, ALDI had this to say, “Based directly on customer feedback, we are proud to take meaningful steps to make it even easier for families to fill their carts with confidence by delivering simpler ingredients while continuing to provide the quality and value they expect from ALDI.”

Aldi said formalizing and expanding the restricted list is designed to create consistent standards across categories and provide clearer expectations for suppliers as reformulations move forward.

The initiative comes as retailers and regulators increase scrutiny of artificial ingredients and labeling practices. Other grocers have recently announced similar efforts to reformulate private label products and remove select additives in the coming years.

Aldi said it will work with supplier partners to maintain product quality and pricing as formulations change, emphasizing that its private label assortment will continue to meet internal sourcing and testing standards.
