Metro Beat: Summer Savings, Industry Gatherings and a Friendly Farewell

9 Min Read

Greetings everyone and I hope that you all have been enjoying the summer and been able to take advantage of the warm months and get out and spend time with friends and family.

In these hard times and belt-tightening that we have all been living through, it is always nice to see retailers lower prices on key items for their customers. Stop & Shop and Costco started the process in our area in time for the Memorial Day weekend.

And now another local group has joined in that effort as America’s Food Basket, Inc. (AFB) announced price reductions on thousands of grocery and household essentials at participating America’s Food Basket and Ideal Food Basket stores. The initiative is designed to help customers save more on the products they purchase most often throughout the summer and through Labor Day.

The company has lowered prices across a wide range of everyday essentials, with savings ranging from a few cents to more than $2 per item. The promotion reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to providing quality products at affordable prices and helping customers stretch their grocery budgets.

“At America’s Food Basket and Ideal Food Basket, we understand that every dollar counts,” said David Siegel, Chief Executive Officer. “These price reductions are another way we’re delivering value to our customers by lowering the cost of the everyday items families rely on.”

Congratulations to good friend Joe Kazsuba as he has joined Cannoli Plus as Director of Sales and Marketing. Many know Joe from his long tenure at Bimbo Bakeries and then his most recent employment over the last eight years as Director of Sales at House Foods America.

Cannoli Plus is a Brooklyn, NY based manufacturer of specialty bakery items and cookies and Joe will be spearheading their efforts to grow their supermarket business.

Just remember Joe….Leave the gun, take the cannoli! Good luck!

One of the largest food shows in the Northeast occurred in mid-July as the National Supermarket Association (NSA) and Porky Products held their trade and selling show at the Meadowlands Expo Center in Secaucus, New Jersey.

This show has emerged as a terrific opportunity to connect with retailers, manufacturers, and industry leaders as well as strengthen relationships and build new partnerships with the independent market.

There was a constant buzz throughout the day from the attendees and exhibitors, and independent supermarket owners filled the aisles seeking out new products and deals.

It was a big success and NSA President Anthony Pena told us that next year will be even better!

This show is really turning into a must attend event for the food industry and it is one of those “happenings” that should be added to your calendar for next year.

Kudos go out to the NSA and Porky Products for continuing to grow this event. The infusion of the new board members at the NSA has continued to work very well with the “OG” members and it is really showing. Great job by all involved!

The next big event for the NSA is their Annual Anniversary Gala on November 7th at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut.

The NSA will honor Real Products and Clasicorp as Brand of the year and Company of the year and their representatives, Nelson Eusebio and Alvaro Munoz. For more information contact Denise Diaz at denise.diaz@nsaglobal.org

And as I sign off for this month, I wanted to give a heartfelt farewell to Jeff Metzger as he has officially retired from his role at Best-Met Publishing Company.

Jeff has had a front row seat (and the VIP guest suite too) to everything that has occurred in the retail food landscape over the last 5 decades and his knowledge, wit, humor and ability to convey those happenings have been exemplary.

I have been in the food trade publishing business for almost 40 years now, and I have been exposed to some really dynamic people in the publishing side of the business, and through all of the learning, teaching, leading and networking during that time, I can safely say that Jeff is the most accomplished writer and business owner I have come across.

His determination and drive to get the story accurate and insightful was always paramount to his being and I was always amazed at his ability to listen, read and decipher financial reports and earnings call. He can be self-effacing and brilliant at the same moment which made it entertaining and fascinating to be around.

I first met Jeff back in the early 1990’s in Chicago at the old FMI Show. As always, it was Jeff and Dick (Bestany) together holding court at Harry Caray’s for a crowd of Who’s Who of food industry peeps who knew that would be “The” place to be while at the FMI Show.

And it was the same way every year until the FMI Show ceased in 2007. I really believe after all the years JeffandDick (it always seemed like it should be one word) rightfully could lay a claim to a small percentage ownership in the bar after all of that time and business they brought in.

That scene would continue through the years at different cities and different conferences, but what I came to learn was, that while we all knew Dick as the man who commanded the room, I looked forward to having chats with Jeff because he was of Bank of Knowledge not only for the food industry, but for all types of general knowledge and trivia. (Both worthy and idiotic!) We would swap old Long Island stories having both spending our youths there. Music, Sports just about anything and everything made for enjoyable conversations and moments in time.

I know he will cherish the extended time he will now have to watch his two grandchildren Zeke and Thea and he has already instilled in Zeke the fandom and love for his beloved NY Mets.

So a fond farewell to you Jeff, but it is not goodbye, as I will look forward to our conversations in the future.
