Harris Teeter plans to invest approximately $253 million over the next three years to modernize select stores and open three locations across the Charlotte metropolitan area.
The Matthews, N.C.-based grocer said Sept. 15 that the investment will include renovations and other improvements at stores throughout the region. Locations in Fort Mill and Rock Hill, S.C., and Matthews, Waxhaw, Concord and Huntersville, N.C., are among those expected to receive updates.
Harris Teeter did not disclose how many existing stores will be renovated or provide a breakdown of how the $253 million will be allocated.
The Kroger-owned supermarket chain also plans to open stores in Fort Mill and Lake Wylie, S.C., and Kannapolis, N.C. Opening dates and additional details about the locations were not announced.
“For generations, Charlotte families have made us a part of their neighborhoods, and this investment reflects our long-term commitment to the customers and communities we serve,” Harris Teeter President Tammy DeBoer said. “These investments reflect areas where we believe we can better support our customers and communities — from select department and service enhancements to updates that improve convenience in stores.”
Planned improvements will vary by location but may include expanded fresh, bakery and prepared-food departments, along with updated layouts and fixtures intended to make stores easier to navigate.
Harris Teeter said some stores will also receive new décor and signage, shopping carts and improvements to building exteriors or parking areas. The company plans to make changes intended to improve the speed and convenience of its pickup and delivery services.
The renovations will be completed in phases over the next three years. Harris Teeter said it expects to hold grand reopening celebrations at some renovated stores beginning this fall, including “Taste of Teeter” events featuring samples and other in-store activities. Details about individual store projects and reopening dates will be announced as the work progresses.
The investment reinforces Harris Teeter’s position in its home market as the Charlotte region continues to attract new residents, retailers and grocery development.
Harris Teeter traces its local roots to 1936, when W.T. Harris opened his first grocery store. Harris and Willis L. Teeter combined their businesses in 1960 to form Harris Teeter.
The company is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Cincinnati-based Kroger and operates more than 250 stores and 85 fuel centers across eight states and the District of Columbia. Harris Teeter employs approximately 36,000 associates.
