The Top 10 Grocery & CPG Stocks: Wall Street Finds Plenty to Like

4 Min Read

Wall Street finally found something to like last week, and grocery retailers were among the biggest beneficiaries.

The S&P 500 gained 1.15% over the five trading sessions ending October 9, closing at 7,811.54. A cooler labor market report eased concerns about further interest rate hikes, while retreating Treasury yields gave stocks some breathing room.

But the more interesting story was what happened in retail. Investors showed a decided preference for companies selling groceries, household necessities and value-priced merchandise. Consumers are still spending, but they’re being selective about where that money goes. Wall Street appears to be paying attention.

Discount Retailers Lead the Charge

Dollar General Corp. (NYSE:DG) had a terrific week, climbing 6.96% to $127.22. The company has had its share of operational problems, but its emphasis on improving store execution and strengthening its value proposition appears to be resonating.

Walmart Inc. (NASDAQ:WMT) wasn’t far behind, jumping 6.80% to $111.35. There’s an awful lot going right for Walmart these days. Its grocery business remains a powerful traffic generator, its digital operations continue to mature, and its ability to compete aggressively on price gives it considerable leverage.

Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) gained 4.34% to $262.43, while BJ’s Wholesale Club Holdings Inc. (NYSE:BJ) advanced 3.81% to $98.58 and Costco Wholesale Corp. (NASDAQ:COST) climbed 2.85% to $946.92.

I’ve maintained that the warehouse club model is particularly well suited to the current consumer environment. Membership loyalty, strong private label programs and a reputation for delivering value give these operators a meaningful advantage.

Supermarkets Have a Good Week, Too

The Kroger Co. (NYSE:KR) climbed 4.42% to $61.64, while Albertsons Companies Inc. (NYSE:ACI) advanced 3.83% to $12.20.

Both face considerable pressure to demonstrate they can compete effectively against Walmart, Aldi and the warehouse clubs. Kroger’s increasingly aggressive approach to supplier pricing makes its performance particularly interesting.

Ahold Delhaize N.V. (OTC:ADRNY) gained 1.99% to $36.32, while Sprouts Farmers Market Inc. (NASDAQ:SFM) edged up 1.04% to $65.14.

Sprouts’ relatively modest gain caught my attention, particularly given the investor enthusiasm surrounding its differentiated assortment and health-conscious customer base.

Target Is the Odd Man Out

Target Corp. (NYSE:TGT) declined 1.51% to $153.64, a conspicuous result during an otherwise strong week.

Target’s greater exposure to discretionary merchandise remains a disadvantage when consumers are watching their budgets. Apparel and home furnishings are considerably easier to postpone than groceries and household necessities.

What I’m Watching Next

I wouldn’t read too much into five trading sessions, but the pattern is worth noting. The next earnings reports should tell us considerably more about comparable-store sales, transaction counts, promotional spending and margins.

For supermarket operators, the challenge remains familiar: driving traffic through competitive pricing while protecting profitability. For now, Wall Street likes what it sees in grocery and value retailing. We’ll find out soon enough whether the numbers justify that optimism.
