CPG Giants Rethink the Price of Growth
America’s biggest CPG manufacturers may finally be recognizing that they’ve pushed prices too far. Duke Winston examines how companies like PepsiCo are cutting prices to win back shoppers, even at the expense of near-term profits. I think it’s a sensible strategy, although hardly a painless one. Getting consumers to buy more is relatively straightforward when prices fall. Turning those additional purchases into sustainable earnings is another matter entirely. And that could take years to accomplish.
Duke Winston picks up the story from here…
Gen Z Gives Frozen Foods a $93.5 Billion Boost
Frozen foods are getting a generational makeover, and the numbers suggest grocers should be paying attention. Turns out Gen Z shoppers are reshaping a $93.5 billion market, bringing new appetites for protein, global flavors and convenience. What catches my eye is that frozen foods are actually outperforming the broader grocery business, including positive unit growth. That’s no small achievement these days, and I think we’re beginning to see the implications for supermarket merchandising and assortment.
Higher Gas Prices Definitively Reshape Grocery Shopping
Higher gasoline prices are changing the grocery equation, and retailers may be underestimating the consequences. A shopper’s decision increasingly involves more than what’s on the shelf or the weekly circular. Transportation costs, delivery fees and digital promotions are reshaping where households spend their grocery dollars. A $25 Instacart discount can suddenly make a supermarket 45 minutes away competitive with the store down the street. That’s a fascinating development with implications for customer loyalty.
Albertsons Adds Financial Firepower to Its Board
Albertsons is bringing yet another seasoned executive into its boardroom, and the timing is hardly coincidental. Harmit Singh, departing finance and growth chief at Levi Strauss, joins a 15-member board as the supermarket operator confronts disappointing financial results and a sweeping operational review. The appointment underscores just how seriously Albertsons is taking its financial challenges. Four decades of experience are certainly welcome, but translating boardroom expertise into improved supermarket performance will be the real test.
