Bob Gleeson has been promoted to chief operating officer of Weis Markets, the 198-store regional supermarket chain based in Sunbury, PA. He replaces Kurt Schertle who left the company in October. Gleeson will continue to report to Jonathan Weis, the retailer’s chairman, CEO and president.
In his new position, Gleeson will oversee the company’s merchandising, marketing, advertising, store operations, information technology, asset protection, and pharmacy departments. He will also have oversight of the supply chain departments including distribution, transportation and manufacturing.
Prior to being named COO, Gleeson served as Weis’ senior vice president of merchandising and marketing, a role he had held since 2021. The Maryland native joined Weis in June 2018 after a lengthy career with Shoppers Food in the Baltimore-Washington area. In July 2019 he was promoted to vice president of fresh merchandising.
Gleeson began his food industry career in 1984 at Shoppers as a part-time grocery associate working for the original owners of the Washington area independent – the Herman family.
As Shoppers began to expand and the retailer became a dominant regional chain, Gleeson’s career flourished. He rose through the ranks to become VP-center store, senior VP-merchandising before becoming Shoppers president from 2013 to 2018. Gleeson also had a short stint at Acme Markets in 2010 as senior VP-merchandising.
Gleeson holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing from the University of Maryland and a master’s degree from the University of Baltimore.
